SOLOS for the SUMMER

Each morning this summer, you can use this Lectio Divina pattern below to help you spend time alone with God and dive deeper into His Word. You can look back to your camp notebooks to the Morning Prayer service on p.39 and use that as a guide to help you learn to pray and to have a time of daily confession. In the summer readings, we have included our camp memory verse, Colossians 1:15-22, periodically throughout the summer to help you continue to hide that truth of God in your heart. The first selection of readings are from the Gospel of John. The next are from the Gospel of Luke. The readings go from the first day after camp until Labor Day.

LECTIO (reading)
Slowly and gently reading and rereading the scripture until a word or phrase draws your attention, either through attraction or resistance. Often times, it’s helpful during this part to actually write out some of the scripture that is sticking out to you. If you write it out, you can circle words that are repeated, underline phrases and it can be helpful in understanding more of the meaning of the passage. Ask, “What does this reveal to me about the heart of God?”

MEDITATIO (meditation)
Once you land on a word or phrase, gently repeat that word or phrase to yourself. Consider writing that word or phrase out multiple times. Reflect on the feelings that come with that word- both positive and negative. Permit the living and active words of Scripture to provoke your emotions. Pay attention to what you feel and experience.

ORATIO (oration- speaking to God)
Allow your whole being to become prayer. Put your body in a position that allows you to connect and surrender to God. Think about how you are using your hands. Are your shoulders tight? Once you are aware of your body, honestly express your deepest thoughts, feelings and desires to God. Pray yourself empty.

CONTEMPLATIO (contemplation)
Now, let go of these thoughts and drop into God’s presence. Rest in him. Give up control. Become a listener to Him, rather than a speaker to Him. Pay attention to what God has to say to you.
